The Patch

I was out in the fields clearing the trash early one morning. Hard work, dirty work. Time goes quickly these days. After awhile the things of this world lose their meaning and you are free to just enjoy the moment as it comes. A stranger approached me. He stood to my left. I did not turn to see who it was so I replied unpleasantly, “Excuse me, excuse me, I do not know you.” He looked at me and said, “May I tell you a story?”

I told him my tormentors.

“My sister and her friend were driving by on the road. They were crying and wailing and panicking because the truck was coming. They ran off the road into a field. He ran after them. He was running as fast as he could. He caught up to them and hit them with the truck. They went up in a puff of smoke, laying on the ground in a heap. He picked them up and put burning gasoline around them. He sped off. As he drove up he yelled, “I will burn you up! You will burn in eternity for your wicked actions!” He Accelerated so fast his car speared into the ditch at a high rate of speed. His terrified friends ran to him and he asked them to run off the road. He said, “You will burn in eternity for your wicked actions!”

I was frozen with fear. His words seared my heart. Our friend was terrified sitting in the back seat. He was terrified but his eyes were glancing up at the Savior as he sat in the driver’s seat. He said, “Please, don’t make me do this!”

“Oh son, why would I do this to you? You’re such a good man! Don’t you know I’m hurting here?”

I crumbled to the seat and cried, “Oh, please, don’t let me die alone!”

“Look up.”

I looked up and saw Jesus standing there, with his hands lifted wondering where the fire was coming from. When he looked up there was no fire, only darkness. Then he instantaneously froze in his seat.

I’m sure that he was never the same again. I think he had an anguish in his heart that he had not experienced before. I’m sure of it.

I relinquished my will in my mind. I surrendered my will to the one who had claimed his life. Jesus’ love overcame my selfishness. With his love for me, he gave his life for me.

I was a selfish child. With his love, he broke the cycle of sin and allowed me to sit on the inside of a closed heart, free from the dangers of the world.

I understood. I really did. I cried my frustrations out as I hung my head. Years ago, this phrase describes how I was. I carried the discontent that resides within.

“They fight among themselves, wentit! They fight among themselves, wentit! “Why are you fighting amongst yourselves?” according to Isaiah, Chapter 34, Verses 9&10.

I am a selfish person. But, according to Jesus, it is righteous to be selfish. Allow me to initiative and proposal selfishness.

QUESTIONS in REVIEW:

1. Is your consciousness concealed in your selfishness? How might it hinder your attainment of higher goals?

2. How do you perceive the world: as a place or as one without a soul?
